What to do when your filling or crown falls out

Losing a dental filling or crown can be a surprising—and sometimes unsettling—experience. While it may not always be painful at first, it should never be ignored. At Dentherion, we often remind our patients that early response is the key to preserving your dental health and avoiding complications.

Here’s what to do if your filling or crown suddenly falls out:

🛑 1. Don’t Panic—But Don’t Delay

A lost crown or filling isn’t always an emergency, but it does require prompt attention. The exposed tooth underneath is now vulnerable to sensitivity, infection, or damage. Acting quickly can prevent further discomfort and more invasive treatments.

🧼 2. Keep the Area Clean

Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water to cleanse the area and reduce the risk of infection. Avoid using alcohol-based mouthwash, as it may irritate the exposed tooth.

🦷 3. Save the Crown or Filling (If You Can)

If the crown is intact, store it in a clean container and bring it to your dental appointment. In many cases, we can re-cement it back into place—saving you time and cost. Avoid attempting to glue it back yourself.

🍽️ 4. Be Careful What You Eat

Until you can see your dentist, chew on the opposite side of your mouth. Stick to soft foods, avoid anything sticky, crunchy, or too hot/cold. This helps protect the exposed area and reduces discomfort.

⚠️ 5. Don’t Ignore Any Pain or Sensitivity

If you’re experiencing sharp pain or sensitivity to temperature or pressure, it’s a sign that your tooth may be exposed or even infected. Contact your dental clinic immediately.

🩹 6. Use Temporary Dental Cement (Optional)

If you’re unable to get immediate care, pharmacy-bought temporary dental cement can help protect the tooth for a short time. However, this is not a substitute for professional treatment.

📞 7. Schedule a Dental Appointment Immediately

At Dentherion, we offer priority appointments for patients experiencing lost crowns or fillings. Our expert team will evaluate the tooth, clean the area, and determine whether your restoration can be reattached—or if a new solution is needed.
